The next step is coming up with that first page. It's not as difficult as you might be thinking. Just let people know you are new to the Web, and you can add the details as you go. If you use one of the companies I have listed in the SITES section, you will find they all have a different way of getting the pages to their Host machines (or Servers).
Let's focus on how to create a page from scratch. First, see the TOOLS section or CLICK HERE to download a copy of the Web Tutor from .You should find the Web Tutor software to be very easy to use and full of useful ideas.
Afteryou have created the basics of your first web page, come back here for tips on how to get serious about getting the most out of your Webspace.
Now that you have a Homepage ( I realize that may be a wild assertion) you are ready to add personal touches. Only you can decide what background or font is best for you, so don't be afraid to experiment.
Getting the most out of your Homepage involves time, so don't feel as though you need to have the perfect page right away. Develop it. Ask for advice from friends who have seen it.
NONAGS is probably the best place on the Web to find Free software, services, files, etc. It was there that I found Web Tutor, an .HTML format help system for writing .html code and developing Web Pages. Don't even ask, just GET IT.
Also from NONAGS, get ARACHNOPHILIA as your web page composer if you don't have one built in to your browser.
In order to upload
files to a site like XOOM, you will need WS_FTP,
a great FTP client for those of you who have a winsock or TCP/IP connection
to the Web. Does not work with Dial-up.WS_FTP
is available from Ipswitch
CROSSWINDS: A good host that groups members geographically. Their file management system is first rate. They also have tools to link members of like interests and to generate traffic to your site. You also get UNLIMITED SPACE for your pages!!
XOOM: This host is very good. It gives detailed instructions on maintaining your Site, and it doesn't force you to display the XOOM logo on your pages.
FREEYELLOW: This host gives you lots of space, but the upload procedures are slow. Don't plan on having too many pages here, as the maintenance would be prohibitive. They will try to get you to sell Free Web Sites. It's an interesting idea, but read the fine print CAREFULLY!
TRIPOD: This host is not too bad. They would be a lot better if they didn't load their main navigation window every time you access your homepage.
GEOCITIES:
This is an interesting one. They group people by interests.
Your homepage could be located in the HEARTLAND or AREA51 or another group.
To get one, you pick an area that is interesting to you, then within that
larger group you browse the smaller groups until you find an empty LOT.
This lot will have an address like 2295 or 4067. So your homepage
could look like this: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Valley/7761/.
That's mine.
